White Water Fun

We were in need of a Hooks Family Fun day.  Three weeks ago, Ryan was in Alaska.  Two weeks ago, the girls were in Birmingham.  Earlier this week, Ryan and I were in Florida for Lois' funeral.  We both had church meetings Wednesday night.  We missed just being together.  So, Ryan and I decided to put everything else aside and enjoy a family fun day on Friday.  We headed to White Water for the first time this season.  We had a blast!

We put our things down and immediately headed over the Bahama Bobsled family ride.  Last year, Mia hated this ride; it terrified her.  However, she said she wanted to try it again this year.  We encouraged her superhero courage to come out, so she excitedly tried it.  She and Lily squealed the whole way down, but when we finished she exclaimed "That was awesome!  Let's do it again!"  So, we did.  We immediately went back in the line and did it a second time.  I'm so glad she loved it this time!

After that we decided to head over to the kids' area.  The girls put on their goggles and were ready to play.  They love all the different slides and play areas.
 They loved making splashes!

 Love being with these sweethearts.
We were having a great time!
 Standing under the waterfall.
 Coming down a slide together.
The slides on the pirate ship go really fast even though they are short.
Enjoying a float down the lazy river.
 Behind the waterfall with Daddy.
 Sweet sisters.
Ready to go in the wave pool.
 Just having fun.
One last ride down a slide before heading out for the day.
We rested up for a little bit when we got home, and then continued our family fun day.  We ordered pizza, popped some popcorn and watched Despicable Me.  This was a great day together!

A Morning at the Zoo

I wanted to get out and enjoy this beautiful morning, so the girls and I headed to the zoo.  Since we have annual passes, we were able to just take it easy and meander around which was nice.  We started out at the flamingos where both girls loudly noted they are stinky animals.
We decided to start at the playground and go the opposite route as normal.  Good call on our part as there were only a couple of other kids there.  Normally the playground is near the end of the loop so it gets more crowded as the day moves along.
Both girls wanted to try their luck at jumping 6 feet like a kangaroo.

My monkeys love to climb.  They affectionately named themselves Swinger (Lily) and Monk (Mia).
They couldn't wait to ride the train.
Studying the map.  Lily enjoyed being our guide.
Next up was the carousel.  We all three rode on panda bears.
Mia was very excited about the petting zoo.  She loves to brush the animals.  Lily waited by the fence for us because she didn't want to pet them today.
 My sweet kangaroos.
My favorite animal to see there is the giant panda.  Po was in the next enclosure sleeping in the tree, but Xi Lan was happily munching away on some bamboo.
After a lunch break, the girls asked to head back to the playground area instead of seeing the other half of the zoo.  Why not? We stopped by to see the giant tortoises on the way.  According to the zookeeper, Al is close to 600 pounds and is almost 125 years old.  His friend, Tex, is 90 years old.  Wow.
We also stopped at the climbing wall.  I was very proud of Lily for finding her courage to give it a try.  She's always been too nervous before, but she tried it this time.
Mia couldn't wait.  She climbed to the top and rang the bell.  Twice.  As a family walked behind me, I heard the dad exclaim "Holy moly!  Is that girl part spider?!" as she quickly and confidently scampered up the wall.
We played on the playground again for a few minutes but I could see the girls were wearing down quickly, so we came on home.  This was a fun morning with my girls!

Random Fun

The girls had fun helping Liz wash her car!
Yesterday morning, Lily came across the plastic eggs we used around Easter.  She put little treasurers inside several of them and hid them in various rooms.  Then she made this treasure map and sent Mia and me on a hunt for them.  This was a fun way to start the day.
Granny sent some of her old costume jewelry to the girls last year.  They played with it some, and then I put it up.  I brought it back out, and they had a lot of fun playing dress up with it.
The girls with some of their paintings.  Mia has a good time with it while Lily takes her time and concentrates.  This is her painting of a Tangled scene where Rapunzel and Flynn are rowing in a boat watching all the lanterns float into the air above the castle.  I love coming home from work and seeing the artwork they've created during the day!
I let the girls have a sleepover in Mia's room last night.  They were so excited!  They laid down about 8, and I could still hear them giggling and having fun about 8:45.  By 9:15, Lily was out, but Mia was too excited to sleep; she asked me to give her "sleep lotion" (Johnson & Johnson's calming sleepy time lotion that smells so good).  I think she finally drifted off about 9:30 or so.  I love times like this when I can see their friendship developing.  I love these two!

Summer is Here

Summer is here!!!  Okay, so technically it's not summer yet, but I always consider summer to start on Memorial Day weekend.  So, here's how we have started out the first few days of a great summer.

Lily and Liz made this "ocean box" after school on Friday.  Lily had seen some of the older kids make something similar, so she wanted to give it a try.  She put two boxes together.  In the top box, there is a dove flying as our family is at the beach.  It's a little difficult to see in the picture, but we're all drawn under the sun against the back wall; on the bottom she colored sand and taped down cut out seashells.  The ocean is in the bottom box.  There are sharks, fish, seaweed, octopus, shells, anemone and a jellyfish drifting along in the tide.  Love this girl's creativity!
On Saturday morning, we dropped Ryan off at the airport as he headed to Alaska for a conference.  From there, the girls and I grabbed some lunch and then headed to Ulta to find some new nail polish.  The girls have loved me painting their toes recently.  The first time we did it a few weeks ago, Mia looked up, smiled and said "this is kinda fun Mommy."  I let them each pick two new colors (bright purple and dark blue for Lily, sparkly pink and sparkly orange for Mia, and a bright blue for me).  They couldn't wait to get home and try out their new polish!
I surprised them Saturday night by throwing a beach party at our home.  They loved their grass skirts and leis.  We turned on some reggae and danced all around just having fun.
I used these fun plates at dinner.  We enjoyed some balsamic salmon, sunshine corn, fruit palm tree, sea creature jello (dolphin, shark, seal and seahorse were the selected creatures) and goldfish.  The girls were excited to have "blue lagoon juice" (aka, blue gatorade) to drink.  What else could we have for dessert but ice cream.  Actually, we're all totally in love with the different flavors of Whole Fruit Sorbets, so we had that but the girls think it's ice cream.
After church and napping on Sunday, I surprised the girls with a "summer fun box" full of goodies...reading books, coloring books, sketch pads, construction paper, crayons, colored pencils, tape, puzzle, Old Maid cards, 3D sidewalk chalk, popsicle tools, flower lollipops, pink lemonade mix, tub tints, color changing loofah and a toy lantern.
Also included in that box were four small sets of Lego Friends.  While Mia immediately went for the lantern, Lily dove into the legos.  She had such a great time putting together all the little sets.  Once that was done, she said "You know what Mommy?  I can create my own ideas with these too," and she set about coming up with her own sets and designs.  I guess this is just a totally new skill set for her; we have never had legos before.
On Monday, Lily asked if we could please go and let her use her saved up money to buy another lego set.  We counted up what she had.  Random side story: she had $10.94.  I told her I would give her 6 cents "for an even $11."  Lily immediately said "Eleven is an odd number."  I had to laugh in agreement and then explain I meant that as a flat amount.  Anyway, we checked the pricing online at Walmart, and she had enough to get a new set, so we headed out.  She looked at a couple of options before settling on "Mia's bedroom" set.  Here she is bringing out her own money to pay at the register.  I was so proud (and thrilled to not spend my money)!
Showing off the new purchase.  Mia also wanted to buy something with her money (a whopping $1.47); luckily, she was quite happy with the 98 cent Elmo tub tints.  They were both so proud!  We have already had lots of fun with both purchases.
After lunch, I tried my hand at making fresh popsicles with pureed strawberries, a little oj and sugar.  They were yummy tasting, but they fell apart pretty easily.  I'm thinking we didn't let them freeze enough; there were two little girls and one adult who were excited to try them.
The weather has been perfect all weekend, so we spent a lot of time outdoors.  Lily picked some flowers for me, and Mia had fun pretending to be a monkey named Monk while she played in the tree.
After resting on Monday afternoon, we headed over to Mom and Dad's for awhile.  We had a lot of fun swimming in their neighborhood pool.  Our friends Cameron and Melanie Ford joined us with their kids Rhyan (who will be 4 on Friday) and Mollianne (who is 6 months).  Lily used a kick board at first, but quickly remembered her swimming skills from last summer.  She was doing a great job swimming all around and jumping in from the side and swimming over.  Obviously, we can't leave her in the pool without supervision, but I don't have to be right next to her anymore which is nice.  Mia thinks she can swim, but doesn't quite have it down yet; that doesn't stop our little daredevil from jumping right in though.  We have to be extra careful with this one and continue to practice with her.
Mia had fun jumping in to Papa!
On Tuesday, Liz inflated this pool for the girls.  They had an absolute blast!  The girls really didn't want to get out!  I have a feeling this will be used quite a bit this summer.
To continue enjoying this beautiful weather, we headed out to the food trucks tonight which is always a nice time.
Welcome summer; we're glad you're here!

Last Day of School

I can't believe last Friday was Lily's last day of Kindergarten!  This has been such a wonderful year for her.  It has been amazing to see her develop in so many different areas.  We are so proud of how hard she has been working.  We feel so blessed to be at ACCA!
Before the school-wide awards ceremony, Mrs. Worrell held a ceremony in her class where she gave each child a certificate for a Christian characteristic that they exemplify.  It was really neat to see because she was right on for each child.  It's amazing to see how all the different personalities and skills worked together to make up such a sweet class.  She awarded Lily a certificate for thoroughness and humility.  I was such a proud Mama!
Everyone is going to miss Mrs. Worrell next year, but we're also very excited for her as she becomes a mommy to Lucy in August!
In addition to Mrs. Worrell's certificate, Lily received an "Excellence in Music" award from Mrs. Lindemann at the school wide awards ceremony; she was pretty excited about that.
After the ceremony and official countdown to summer, everyone headed outside to enjoy a cookout.  What a great way to wrap up the school year with friends!

Mia finished school the week before, but I forgot to put this memento in.  It cracks me up that it says "I like to collect: rocks."  She grabs a rock just about every time we go out somewhere!
