Christmas Countdown 2016

It's the most wonderful time of the year!  This means it's time for our annual Christmas countdown.  I love this tradition!  Here's a look at what we did to count down this year.

Day 1: Both girls had a Barnes and Noble gift card, so we visited after school.  Mia took advantage of the Buy 2, Get 1 Magic Tree House deal while Lily bought one of the bigger Thea Stilton books.
Day 2: We went down to Atlantic Station with the Smith Family which was so much fun!  Elizabeth had free ice skating passes, so we gave that a whirl.  We all had a blast and look forward to doing this again.  The girls did great at their first time to ever try skating; I was proud of them.
Ryan and I had a few laps together.  ðŸ˜€
The big, beautiful tree in the middle made for a great picture of the 5 kids.  This was before it started "snowing" which they loved.
We enjoyed some beverages up on the balcony overlooking the middle area with the big tree.  It was a gorgeous evening with fabulous friends!
Day 3: The four of us went bowling; Lily whooped up on us!
Day 4: Grinch Night at our house.  The girls fixed their hair like Whos, and we enjoyed a Who Feast made up of Roast Beast (NY Strip Steak), Who Hash (hash browns), Grinch Peas (English peas), Who Pudding (vanilla pudding) and Grinch Juice (Sprite and Lime Sherbert) while watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  This was a fun evening together.
Day 5: Christmas Perler beads creations.
 Day 6: Christmas paintings
Day 7: Xdrenaline after school with the Crowley family!
Day 8: The girls picked out items from charity catalogs to give their own money to.  Mia chose giving Fast Growing Seeds through World Vision while Lily chose Feeding Two Hungry Children for a week through Samaritan's Purse.  It's good for them to be reminded how fortunate they are, and how easy it is to share with others.
Day 9: Ice Cream outing to Haagan Daaz after dinner.
Day 10: Peter Pan at Cobb Energy Center.  We all enjoyed this show.
Day 11: Brunch after church at The Georgian Club.  So yummy!
After brunch, Lily had her piano recital at Ridgeview which was lovely, and then we ended the evening by having the Smith's over for the Falcons' game.
Day 12: Mad Libs, Christmas edition, led to some good laughs
Day 13: Stonehaven's Christmas program at school.  Everyone did such a great job.  I love this evening.  We were very proud of Lily too who chose to play "Ode to Joy" on the guitar this year; she learned that at camp over the summer.
Day 14: An evening at the Aquarium.  We had an absolute blast, and I could fill this with tons of pictures; instead I'll just put up this collage.  The place was practically empty which was nice, and that led to lots of close up views.  We enjoyed exploring the new kids area, seeing the dolphin show and the sea lion show, touching the starfish and rays, climbing in with the penguins, and taking in the massive tanks filled with tropical fish, huge manta rays, beluga whales, whale sharks and many other sea life.  Towards the end of our time, we happen to glance in a window, and a lady came out and offered to give us a backstage tour.  She took us above the huge tank where they feed the whale sharks (and friends) and told us all sorts of interesting facts.  This was such a cool evening!
Day 15: Reading The Polar Express before bed.
Day 16: Game day.  We started with Argh.
Moved on to Kid Trivia Pursuit.
Ended with Harry Potter Clue.  It was a fun evening!
Day 17: Family Christmas in Birmingham.  Liz arranged for all the kids to read and act out Luke 2 which was absolutely precious.  Merritt made an adorable Jesus, Liam was the cutest little sheep (who refused to keep his ears on!), Caroline was a darling angel, and Lily and Mia made excellent narrators and shepherds.  This may have been my favorite enactment of Luke 2 that I've ever seen!
Day 18: We drove back from Birmingham in time for Meme's Christmas gathering at Wayne's house.
Another fun evening with family, food, singing and presents.
Day 19: We had family movie night to watch Elf.  We were so glad Grandpops was in town and joined in with us!
Day 20: Ryan, David and the girls went to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them during the day (boo for me having to work).
Day 21: We played a Christmas edition of Would You Rather while eating a spaghetti dinner.  Not really easy to get pictures of this!  A few of the questions that led to fun discussion: Would you rather...be at home and receive lots of presents or go to Disney World and not receive any more presents, visit the North Pole or visit Bethlehem, be one of Santa's elves or one of Santa's reindeer, receive many small presents or receive one large present, or lastly, not celebrate Christmas this year or not celebrate your birthday this year?
Day 22: We drove up to Jefferson City to visit with the Farris family.  We missed having Granny with us.  It was nice to visit with everyone else, and the kids had a fun time together.  We enjoyed getting to meet baby Jackson!
Day 23: After driving home from Tennessee, we made treats for our local fire station.  Mia wanted to make her famous brownies, and Lily opted to make elephant ears since that's what she accidentally burned a few months ago which actually brought the fire department to our home early one morning!
Day 24: Christmas Eve, wow!  We started off the morning by having Mom, Dad and Wayne's family over for our traditional brunch.  It is so very delicious, and I don't eat again for the rest of the day!  After brunch, everyone stayed to watch the Falcons game (or part of it) which was fun too.
After the game, our family delivered the treats to our fire station.  The guys seemed to appreciate it, and they even let the girls climb in the truck this year.
Finally, the girls get to open one present before bed.  This year they opened boxes that contained Kavu messengers bags, new pajamas, winter coats and gloves.
It's been another wonderful December filled with lots of fun times and memory making.  The highlights for me were definitely ice skating and our aquarium trip.  Time with extended family is always well spent and enjoyable too.  We are so incredibly blessed.  Merry Christmas!

A few things here and there

It was so gorgeous that one Sunday afternoon, I decided to take a nap outside.  I was woken up by two ninjas!
Mia enjoying two of her birthday presents...a Harry Potter dress up costume and her light up scooter.
Welcome to the world of orthodontics Lily!
Lily's enjoying the electric scooter too!
After putting Mia to bed one evening, I kept hearing a thumping noise.  When I walked in to investigate, I realized Mia was doing handstands on her bed; the thump was when she would fall over.  Oh this girl!
We took the start of Thanksgiving break to enjoy a one-night staycation at The Ritz in Buckhead.  We walked over to Phipps to enjoy dinner at Johnny Rocket's before coming back to the hotel to take in a gorgeous sunset and a couple of hours in the swimming pool.
Mia and I shared a bed while there.  She just wanted to stay snuggled up next to me.  I didn't mind.
We took the morning to try Sublime Donuts and then have a couple more hours in the pool.  They were worn out by the end.  As you can see from Mia's note though, this was a fantastic hotel that we absolutely enjoyed!

Happy 8th birthday Mia!

Mia is 8 years old now...wow!  I can't believe it!  Her birthday fell on the last day of school before Thanksgiving break which worked out well.  Ryan and I took Moe's up to have lunch with her which was fun.  After school, we picked up Mia, Lily and two of Mia's great friends, Sarah and Sophie.  Mia was super pumped to have a rock climbing party!  We changed clothes and immediately headed over to Stone Summit which is where Mia loves to climb.  Her two friends are pretty fearless as well, so they couldn't wait to get through the safety lesson and start climbing!  They had a blast!

A little bit into the session, Lily decided it looked too fun to resist, so she got in on the action.  I was so glad she took part in something Mia loves because Mia adores her big sister and wants to have fun with her!
These girls climbed HARD for a little over two hours.  They went nonstop.  They had calloused hands, a few ankle blisters, and some scratches and scrapes to show their hard work.  I was so proud of each of them.  They did an amazing job!
After climbing, we went over to Steak and Shake for dinner.  Mia wanted to go to Wing Factory, but it would have taken too long to get there, and they were all starving by this point.  She kept a great attitude and we moved on to Steak and Shake.
After dinner, we headed on home for presents, ice cream dessert and Finding Dory in the comfy chairs.  All the girls had a lot of fun together.  Mr. Mausz came to pick up Sophie about 10, but Sarah was able to spend the night which thrilled Mia.  Lily made them a fort under our dining room table.  There was just enough room for two sleeping bags and a bazillion stuffed animals.  By 11, these two were sound asleep.  They managed to sleep until about 7:30 on Saturday morning, and then they enjoyed donuts that Ryan went to pick up.  Mrs. Crowley came about 10 to pick up Sarah.  This was a great way for Mia to spend her birthday...lots of adventure with some great friends!

We'll go for her check up in a few days, but I wanted to go ahead and post about her birthday.  I also wanted to go ahead and catch her "favorite things" list., so here we go...

Mia is absolutely amazing.  She is truly an awesome person to be around.  She is the most generous and fiercely loyal person I know.  She has a great, determined attitude, but can also roll with changes when she needs to.  She is kind and loving to others.  She's hilarious.  She loves to play board games and card games.  She's stunningly beautiful, inside and out.  Joy overflows out of her.  She loves to travel and be adventurous.  Her love of reading has really taken off over this last year.  She is so smart, and you can see it in the observations she makes.  She thinks outside the box, and I am confident there are big things in store for her.  I cannot wait to see how God's plan plays out in her life.  I am so proud to call Mia my daughter.

Family Pictures 2016

We were thrilled that for the fifth year in a row, Allison Mauer took our annual family pictures.  We were especially glad because we wanted to shoot the pictures in Birmingham this year with Ryan's family.  We were so grateful she agreed to drive over for it!

Bama with her five grandkids.
We even got a few great ones of the whole family!
Each individual family had their pictures too; Allison did a great job, as always.  Here are a few of my very favorites.

 I love my family!

China Trip

I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to return to China in early November!  I love visiting this country.  For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by their culture, their history and their food.  Every person I've met has been so lovely and welcoming.  It's such a wonderful place to go!  I could fill this entry with so many pictures, but instead, I have some collages that I've put together showing lots of the interesting places I visited.

We left very early Saturday morning and flew to Detroit.  We had a few hours layover and then boarded the 14+ hour flight to Beijing.  With the time change, it was late Sunday afternoon when we arrived.  By the time we got to the hotel, it was dinner time, so we walked over to a noodle house.  We ate a quick (delicious) bite and then headed back to the hotel.  We were exhausted and ready for a good night's sleep!  On Monday, we knew we needed to walk around to help us adjust to the time change.  It's a 13 hour difference, thanks to Daylight Savings, so our bodies naturally want to be doing the exact opposite.  We walked about 22,000 steps that day!  It was such a gorgeous day to be out and about though.  We visited Tienanmen Square, Mao's Mausoleum and the Forbidden City in the morning.
We took a break for lunch (Peking Duck...yum!) and then walked over to the Temple to Heaven for part of the afternoon.  We arrived fairly close to closing, so it wasn't too crowded.  This is always a lovely place to visit and learn about.
We then ventured over to the Pearl Street Market where I simply enjoyed watching friends haggle over deals.  Soon, we were all worn out (22,000 steps!!!) so we headed on back to the hotel for the night.  On Tuesday, we flew to the city of Qingdao.  This city is unbelievably gorgeous.  It sits right on the Yellow Sea.  While it was chilly and windy a couple of days, it was so much fun to walk around and take in the city.  There are beautiful beaches all around, and we learned that during the 2008 Olympics, this is where they hosted the sailing events.
Our touring took us all over the city where we got to soak it all in.  We had such fantastic weather on this trip, so we wanted to just be outside all the time.  I'm so thankful I got to visit this area, meet several locals and experience a different style of food.  I've typically enjoyed Sichuan style food on my other trips, but Qingdao is in the Shandong Province, so it was a totally different taste.  There was also a lot of seafood since we're in a port town.  Not surprisingly, it was all delicious!
On Sunday evening, Ashlee, Walt and I flew on back to Beijing.  It was quite an adventure as we missed our original flight and none of us speak Mandarin to figure out what was going on, but we made it back to the capital close to midnight.  It was such a foggy night that we were shocked when we woke up to such beautiful weather on Monday morning, but we were so thankful.  We had a tour of the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall to explore, and this weather could not have been any more perfect!  I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've wanted to climb the Great Wall for as long as I can remember.  I don't know why or when my fascination started, but I've always thought this would be such an amazing experience.  I assure you that I wasn't disappointed.  I can't even describe how wonderful this was.  I took so many pictures, and I just kept stopping to mentally take it all in...oh yeah, and to catch my breath because these hills are no joke.  This is probably the coolest thing I've ever done, and I loved it.  I am so incredibly grateful for this opportunity!
I just couldn't stop smiling on this excursion!  After spending a few hours on the Wall, our fantastic tour guide, Chris, took us to a great farmer's restaurant not far away, and then we started driving back into the city.  We had a little time left, so he took us to the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet.  The entryway was lined with gorgeous yellow ginkgo trees, and the inside was made of beautifully designed temples.  Afterward, Chris helped us meet up with our friend Abby who we enjoyed a fun dinner and durian ice cream with.  It was a wonderful way to wrap up the trip.  I am so thankful that I was able to spend this time in China again, and I look forward to returning!

2016 Reformation Day and Halloween

My girls still enjoy playing dress up, so October 31 is a great day for them!  They get to start the day at school celebrating Reformation Day, and then they get to change costumes for Halloween that evening.  Win, win in their books!  For Reformation Day, Lily dressed as Mary and she took a baby doll as Jesus.  Mia wore her London knight costume again.  Both rocked their looks!
Lily's class on the way to their garden.
Mia with her friend, Yabsera, at the Reformation celebration.
The girls changed it up for the evening.  Lily was excited to trick or treat as a chef while Mia loved being a ninja!  We had fun at the neighborhood chili party before trick or treating.  After getting back to our house, Ryan hid candy around the upstairs for the girls to find inside.  It was really a fun little evening.
