NYC Mother Daughter Trip, Day 2

On Monday morning, we grabbed a Starbucks breakfast and then took a taxi over to the 9/11 Memorial.  You can't help but gaze up at the new Freedom Tower.  It's beautiful.
We started by viewing the fountains built on top of the former World Trade Centers which are surrounded by the names of all the individuals who died on 9/11.
This picture is the first to greet you inside the memorial.  It was taken just a few minutes before the first plane hit.
After seeing a timeline of events from the day, you see this structure and hear people from around the world talking about what a beautiful day it was, how they heard about the attack, and what they were thinking as the day unfolded.
The iconic picture taken a little while later of all the smoke pluming into the air.
This art piece was amazing.  There is one blue square for each person who passed away that day.  Each square represents the artist's take on all the different shades of blue.  Most people who remember the day of 9/11 specifically remember what a beautiful blue day it was, but everyone sees blue just a little bit different.
This was a replica of what was drawn on the firehouse door for the station that lost its entire company as they went to help people.
One of the fire trucks mangled from the destruction
There were several commemorative art pieces throughout the memorial, like these.
A piece of steel which was totally bent after one of the planes hit it.
I thought this was really cool.  You write a message on the board and a minute later it projects it up onto the wall with everyone else's message.  It was really neat to see all the messages, especially those in different languages; it was a good reminder that this day impacted the whole world.
Outside was the pretty Survivor's Tree.  This tree was buried in the rubble, but nursed back to health.  Today it stands as a tribute to those who survived.
After a beautiful and humbling morning at the 9/11 Memorial, we ubered over Sugar Factory.  It was super cool!  They have these huge drinks that bubble and smoke when they pour the mixture in.  Lily got the "Lollipop Passion" while I got "The Drake."

Lily had these fun and bright sliders for lunch; she loved the little souvenir ducky that came with it too.  I had a delicious burger and fries.  This was such a fun and tasty meal!
After lunch we made our way to the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall terminal.  We got to take a free ferry ride to Staten Island and back which provided fantastic views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

After the ferry ride, we decided to take a nice, slow, long walk back to our hotel.  We saw lots of neat New York City items along the way.  First up was the Friends pop up which was celebrating the 25th anniversary of the show.  Tickets sold out almost immediately so we couldn't go in, but we walked through the gift shop and saw the Central Perk set up.  We also saw one of the beautiful cathedrals from the movie National Treasure; I love that movie.
We stopped in at the Strand Bookstore because it's huge and bookstores are always awesome.  We also stopped in to see Carlo's Bakery which is owned by Buddy Valastro.  We didn't try anything but it looked delicious.
For dinner we ate at Junior's Diner; it was pretty good, and Lily loved her Dr. Brown's Cream Soda.
We ended the day at Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.  It had all sorts of fascinating oddities in it that was fun to explore.  This was a huge wall mural made out of postage stamps.
This is Lou Gerigh's famous speech that was written and drawn into a picture.
These were interesting.  The Statue of Liberty is made out of puzzle pieces while the John Lennon one is made out of dog hair.
The gorilla was made out of recycled tire pieces.  You can't help but compare your height to the world's tallest recorded man.  Lily didn't even come up his waist.
We did a ton of walking today, but it was so cool to see so much of the city.

NYC Mother Daughter Trip, Day 1

Off to New York City!  Lily and I were excited to have a trip together to celebrate her 13th birthday.  We headed up on Sunday afternoon and landed at JFK a couple hours later.
It was a beautiful day, and we had a gorgeous view from our room at the Intercontinental.
The manager sent up some tasty treats to welcome us.  Grandpops helped get this reservation through a friends of his.  I think they thought we were pretty important people because of that!
We decided to have room service for dinner on Sunday night; it's always a favorite!
Beautiful nighttime view from our room.
After checking in to the hotel, we headed straight back out to start having fun.  We walked over to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.  It was really cool!  Neither of us really cared for the first room which was filled with celebrities, but the rest of it was awesome.  It was so fun to walk through movie sets, tv shows, royalty, entertainers, musicians, athletes, superheroes, and such.

It was so cool!  After the museum we walked a little further up where we found the theater where Harry Potter runs and Times Square.
We walked through the Disney store which was packed but had lots of fun items in it.  We saw the outside of Radio City too.
We decided to stop in at M&M World too.  So much fun candy!

What a great first day, and it was only a few hours!

September Fun

Part of me feels like September has been a little slow, and the other part of me feels like it's almost over!  Here are a few of the pictures from the month.

We love having friends come over to hang out and spend the night!  Molly Kate and Sophie came over to spend time with the girls, and we all had a great time.  We put the big screen up outside because it was a beautiful night.  It was fun to watch Aladdin together.
Our family was out and about one Saturday morning.  After having breakfast at Tupelo Honey we saw a dog store that had a fun little football in it.  We couldn't resist getting it for Decker.  He loves it and wants to play with it all the time!
The girls were invited to spend the night with Eliza and Olivia Eberhard to celebrate Olivia's birthday.  They went to Willy's for dinner which is always a hit. The girls had a great time at their friends' home, watching movies, playing games, and celebrating Olivia.
7th grade together on the Middle School Retreat up in North GA.  Lily loves this overnight trip; she has a blast with her friends.  We love our school!  This retreat actually was on Ryan's birthday this year, so she was having fun here while Ryan, Mia, and I had a blast at the Braves' game.  It was a gorgeous and cool evening, and we got the win!
I love this girl.  We were all having fun at the Taste of Smyrna festival, and I couldn't resist snapping this cute picture of Mia.
Grandpops and Grandma Jan asked Lily what she'd like for her upcoming 13th birthday, and Lily asked for Grandma Jan to come down and take her shopping.  Grandma Jan flew in on Saturday morning, and we all went to the Taste of Smyrna together.  We hung out there for a little bit before these two ladies left for their shopping adventure and a night at the St. Regis.  How fun!  On Sunday evening, we met back up for dinner together at Kyma which was delicious, and they surprised each of us with gifts.  On Monday, Grandma Jan was able to come to the girls' volleyball game with us which we were really glad for.  Both played well, and we got the win!  We are so thankful for awesome grandparents!
Just a cute picture of Decker.  We love him.
The girls' volleyball team played great on Thursday.  Both girls played a lot which was fun.  Lily had several good bumps and saves.  Coach let Mia serve at the end of the game (her first time to serve in a game), and she won both points, once with an ace!!!  She didn't think she was strong enough to even serve it over, but she did, and she did it really well.  We were even more excited because Lily was out on the court too.  This was the first time they've actually played at the same time, so that was really cool.

We also had parent teacher conferences one afternoon, and both girls are doing so well at school.  We are very thankful for Stonehaven and the opportunities it affords.  This school is such a blessing!

We met the Smith family up at The Battery one evening to catch a Braves' game.  They clinched the division the night before, so this was a fun and relaxed game to attend.  It was a fun night catching up with old friends.
Ryan had a night out with Mia one evening, and he snapped this picture.  I love this girl.
Sarah, Abigail, and Lydia Fox came by to hang out one evening, and they had a blast with our girls.  They did all sorts of things together, but they also played Spicy Uno which led to all sorts of laughs.
Decker giving Lily his best puppy dog eyes begging for some danish one morning.
Our family went to see Darci Lynne perform at CEPAC one evening.  She was so amazing with her puppets and voice projecting.  We all loved this show!
What a fun month we've had!
