10 Years of Christmas Countdowns!

I can't believe we've been doing Christmas countdowns for 10 years now!  These always provide so much fun for our family, in big and small ways.  I absolutely love this tradition!

Here is a picture (or a few) of each day's activities this year:
Day 1: We told the girls we were going to have an intercultural Christmas meal where we had an appetizer, entree, and dessert from a different place around the world.  They were going to have to guess where the food was from, and then we'd talk about the traditions there.  This was all a ruse though.  Instead, we decorated our dining area in Hawaiian themed gear, grilled pork, chopped up some pineapple, made yeast rolls, and prepared sweet potatoes all to tell the girls that we're going to Hawaii next summer!  While they were completely confused as this was nothing like what we'd said we were doing today, they were pretty excited once they realized there's a trip to Hawaii in the near future!
Day 2: The girls put up gel clings in their rooms.  Mia put hers on the mirror while Lily chose one of her windows.
Day 3: We made an assembly line around our table to label, stuff, seal and stamp our Christmas cards.  123 of them were sent this year.

I always love receiving Christmas cards.  We tape each one up on our kitchen windows which is a fun thing to see each day as we're coming and going.
Day 4: When Lily and I visited New York City over Fall Break, we went to Sugar Factory twice which was such a fun and delicious treat.  As I told a friend about when we returned, he mentioned that there is one in Atlanta!  We decided to surprise the girls with dinner here before going to the Botanical Gardens "Nights of Lights" event.  We all loved it!

The gardens were beautiful and lots of fun this evening too!

Day 5: Frozen 2 at the movie theater.
Day 6: Avery and Danielle came home with the girls after play rehearsal on Friday afternoon.  We made s'mores over the outdoor fire pit.  So delicious!
Day 7: After an early lunch we visited the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.  Every year they put out over 300 nativity sets.  They are from all around the world; they are different sizes and made with lots of different mediums.  When we arrived, they told us they had actually just started a funeral service, so most of the areas were closed off.  We were able to see about 50 of the sets.  I hope to go back in a future year because was really cool.
After visiting the church, we went to Atlantic Station to see the Cirque du Soleil production called Volta.  These shows are always spectacular.
Day 8: We enjoyed a morning at church which included getting to see our precious friend, Parker Henderson, baptized.  What a wonderful way to start the day!  After lunch, we drove to see our friend Danae St. Hill perform in her harp concert.  It was lovely.
Day 9: Silly winter glasses making.
 Day 10: Christmas Legos!
Day 11: We went shopping for some Christmas treats for Decker.  He was quite curious to figure out what was in the bag when we got home!
Day 12: The girls each chose a project out of the Samaritan's Purse gift catalog to help someone around the world.
Day 13: An evening at The Battery to enjoy El Felix for dinner, and the light and music show out by the green.

Day 14: We drove over to Birmingham to have some time with our family there.  We couldn't help but go by Samford to give Mr. Beeson a hug.
That evening we went ice skating with Kendall's family which was pretty fun.  I think Mia and Caroline enjoyed it the most!

Day 15: The whole family went to Shades Mountain for church and then gathered at Kendall's for a Parkinson family Christmas.  Bama is always thrilled to have all her grandkids together!
Day 16: Reindeer games at home!  There were lots of giggles as we tried to throw little inflatable rings onto the horns.
Day 17: The Stonehaven Christmas program was beautiful.  Mia sang several songs with her class.  Lily sang a few songs with the middle school girls' chorus.  She also played "What Child is This" on the piano as a solo piece.  Both girls joined the school-wide singing as well.  This is always such a special school event.
Day 18: The day after the program is always a late start morning at school which is definitely welcomed.  We took the opportunity to have breakfast together at J. Christopher's first.  Yum!
Day 19: Suspicion family board game.
Day 20: Ryan, Mia, and I went to the Big Air show at SunTrust Park while Lily went to a friend's birthday party.  It was a little chilly outside but it was amazing to see this humongous ski jump set up on the field and a crazy amount of man-made snow!  Some of the world's best snowboarders competed for the title here.  This was so different than what we usually get to see in Atlanta; we loved it!

Day 21: We watched Elf and the Grinch at our home.  We made it a technology free viewing, so I didn't take a picture.  That's ok; we were just sitting in our chairs.  😁

Day 22: Meme's family Christmas party.  We all gathered at Jodi's house to celebrate together.
Day 23: For Mother's Day this year, I received a gift subscription to Piquant Post and about every 6 weeks I get spices and recipes from around the world to make.  This was a fabulous gift!  The packet that game a couple of weeks ago was all about Scandinavia and included the recipe and spices for Gingerbread Brownies.  We made them this evening instead of our traditional cookies.
Day 24: Johnny Wayne and Nancy came down from Tennessee this year which we appreciated.  They came over to our house with Mom and Dad and joined in our traditional brunch.  It was nice to catch up with them.  They headed on back after we ate, but the rest of the family stayed around to visit and exchange gifts.  It was a very nice morning.
Another successful countdown year!

A Lovely November

It has been a beautiful (though chilly) November!  Of course, as soon as Halloween is over, Ryan and I are itching to put up our Christmas decorations, so that's exactly what we did the first weekend of the month.  I love this view!
Our travel tree with it's new ornaments this year.  They hail from Spain, Canary Islands, Lebanon, Key West, Disney's Yacht Club, New York City, and the Forbidden City in Beijing.  This tree is one of my most favorite traditions of our family.
Our family had the opportunity to serve with Feed My Starving Children one Friday evening.  We all love this organization and this serving time.  We fill bags with rice, dried veggies, and vitamins that is both Kosher and Halal certified, so it can meet the needs of anyone around the world.  We were thrilled to have the Casey family join us this time too.  We were surprised when the girls showed up in the church's Instagram feed for this; we were all so hard at work we didn't even notice the pictures being snapped.
We were excited to welcome the Lutz family back to Atlanta for an evening!  Our old neighbors are now living in Boone, NC as Andy is the Assistant Athletic Director at App State.  App was playing Georgia State, so the whole family came down for the game.  We joined Brandi and Aberle at the game and got to see Andy for a few minutes afterwords.  It was great football weather too...cool but not windy.  This was such a fun evening!
Mia's braces came off just a couple of days after her birthday!  Here's a before and after picture about 18 months apart.  Look at that gorgeous smile!
One of my friends sent this picture to me of Mia at the school Thanksgiving feast.  Love this sweet girl!
Mia was excited to go to Rocket Fizz after school the day after getting her braces off as that meant she could pick out several candies to enjoy.  Ryan added to the fun by asking her friend Charlee and Lily's friend Avery to join in.  I think they were all happy to!
November is always such a wonderful month for us.  There is so much to be thankful for!

North Georgia Getaway

Our family loves when we take a long weekend getaway to the North Georgia mountains.  We go just about every year, and for several years, we've stayed at the same vrbo rental in Mineral Bluff.  It's just right for our family.  We left Friday evening and arrived when it was already pretty dark.  When we got up on Saturday morning, this was our view.  Definitely overcast, but still pretty.  I love seeing all the changing colors on the trees!
Even an overcast sky (or the resulting rain for the entire day) can keep me from smiling when I see this little guy.  How adorable is he?
We were inside a lot of this trip, but that was fine by us.  There was good football on, but we also had a lot of fun playing Apples to Apples and Superfight as a family.
Lily and Decker hung out a lot.
He loved just looking outside.  He'd do this in Lily's room or go out on the enclosed porch.
Dad and Mia had fun playing video games together while Mia and I chose pool and Chinese checkers.
 Just relaxing...
Decker and I went on a nice walk around the neighborhood/mountain side after it stopped raining.  I liked this little decorated area with the waterfall behind it.
We had lots of good snuggle time too!
This was our view the morning we left.  It was stunning!
I love it when our family can get away together.  It's always fun to be with my favorite people!

Happy 11th Birthday to Mia!

Mia is 11!  She woke up to a very magical surprise on her birthday.
It's a Hogwart's acceptance letter from Professor McGonagall!  The newest Gryffindor is on her way!
With Thanksgiving being a week later this year, Mia's birthday actually fell on a school day which she was excited about.  We had a birthday party for her after school.  All the girls in her class (8 in total) changed clothes, and then we had snacks on the playground.  After a little bit of running around, we loaded up our two cars and headed over to Rockin' Jumps.  Mia had her party here last year, and she loved it so much, she wanted to do it again.  With it being a Monday afternoon, there was virtually no one else there which was great.  All the girls had a great time playing on the silks, jousting, jumping on trampolines, rock climbing, shooting basketballs, and of course, dodgeball!  This was such a fun celebration time for all the girls.

After an hour or so of playing, it was time to take a break for pizza and birthday cookie cake.  We are so thankful for these girls.  From left to right we have Eliana, Olivia, Mia, Faith, Yabsera, and Layne with Charlee and Danielle in front.

After dinner it was time to head back out to the gym until parents arrived.  Mia was on Cloud 9 the whole time.  Being with her people is her favorite!

When we got home, Mia was excited to see this lovely bouquet and balloon that had arrived from Grandpops and Grandma Jan.  What a great way to end our celebration of Mia!
Of course, I asked Mia all the traditional birthday questions of favorites, and she said:

TV Show: Hotel Transylvania the series
Book: The Wings of Fire series
Food: Dad's brisket
Drink: Hi-C Fruit Punch
Restaurant: Golden Corral
Animal: Lion or Tiger
Friend: Can't pick just one as she has lots of best friends
School Subject: Latin
Bible Verse: John 3:16

Place to Go: World of Coke if around town, Universal Studios in Orlando if traveling
Game to Play: Monopoly
Memory from the last year: Trip to Italy!
Most Thankful For: Our family
Goal for next year: Make 20 new friends.  Thinking this is possible with camp and new church group

We are so thankful for Mia.  She is ever the optimist, looking for the bright side of everything.  I love her attitude in life as she always lives in the moment.  She is joyful, helpful, and generous.  She loves to read, play video games, do just about anything athletic, love on Decker, listen to music, and sing.  She gives the best hugs of anyone I know.  She is beautiful, inside and out, and we are so proud to call her our daughter.
